Oleander: ( Nerium oleander) A beautiful flowering ornamental shrub but toxic due to the lethal cardiac glycosides oleandrin and neriine which affects the digestive system. Bitter to the taste, an obstacle that works to deter animals ,birdsand humans. Despite Oleander’s toxicity , it is widely used as a houseplant, because of its continual blooming and tolerance to pollution and drought, hardy in tropical areas to Zone 8.

Easy to grow from seed, this vigorous plant makes a good hedge or screen and blooms in flowers of white, pink or yellow. A sun lover Oleander is a good container plant with regular trimming it will last for a long time, keep away from pets and children.

Larches, like the Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) are known to be rot resistant and therefore the wood is valuable for posts, poles, railroad ties, and mine props. It has also been used for many velodrome track surfaces around the world, including Manchester in the UK and Krylatskoye in Moscow. A Fast-growing conifer it is a good hardy landscape tree for parks and yards and is famous for its stunning fall yellow color.

How did California Poppy get its Name?

California Poppies are Gorgeous Wildflowers

A Russian expedition , visiting California in 1816 , discovered and named this native  flower , the  California Poppy (Eschsholzia California) in honor of J. F. Eschscholtz the ship’s surgeon and nature lover . 

A drought tolerant annual flower, the California Poppy is often appreciated as a wildflower and was designated the state flower in 1890.  

These popular flower is truly a native of California and should be celebrated!

Sow the seed in mid spring or late summer/ early autumn for germination in about 2-3 weeks. Well worth planting for its’ stunning display of long-lasting sunset golden colors. One of our favorite flowers this poppy is easy to grow and a very popular garden flower.
